Post Stroke Care

Stroke is a terrible attack on the brain that affects the family just as much as the victim.  When blood circulation is cut off from the brain due to a blood clot, the brain is deprived of oxygen and can result in minor to severe damage.  Memory, movement, and speech/language can be affected, depending on the part of the brain that was damaged.  The main causes of stroke are high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, lack of physical activity, high cholesterol, diabetes, stress, depression, and heart disorders.  It’s important to lead a healthy lifestyle at all times.

This inspirational video tells the stroke survivor story of Cody Dietz, a teenager who could’ve died from stroke if he wasn’t treated immediately with brain surgery.  The doctors said he wouldn’t be able to speak for a year, but it took him a month.  The video also tells the difference between a heart attack and a stroke – though both vascular events, a heart attack gives chest pain, yet a stroke often isn’t painful.  Kathy Morrison, RN of Penn State Hershey Stroke Center says to remember the word F-A-S-T, which stands for Facial Weakness, Arm Weakness, Speech Problems, Time to Call 911.
