24 hour care in tarzana a1 home careAccording to a study recently published in the April (2016) issue of PLOS ONE, researchers from the University of California, San Diego report that higher levels of Vitamin D are associated with reduced risk of cancer.  In countries where there’s less available sunlight, populations tend to have a deficiency in Vitamin D, and there are higher incidences of colon cancer.  You can increase your levels of this “sunshine” vitamin by going outside for leisure strolls, or eat delicious meals with salmon and tuna prepared by a live-in caregiver from A-1 Home Care in Huntington Beach.

Be a Good Samaritan This Month

During the holidays, we especially enjoy hearing about Good Samaritan stories. Just recently, A-1 Home Care heard a story on the news about Don Holder and Dorothy Shepard. Don Holder was an off duty cop in Texas who would often come across 77 year old widow Dorothy Shepard in his neighborhood. Suffering from many health issues, she  was left on her own to recover from surgery. left on her own  When he went to visit her while she was in the hospital, he gave her his cell phone number in case she ever needed his help. After that, he would be seen around town helping Dorothy with errands such as grocery shopping. And what’s most admirable of all is that the officer didn’t seek to gain fame or attention through his acts. In fact, he hadn’t intended that this story be heard, but it wasn’t until this photo was captured by a bystander at a  grocery story that his act of kindness became known.

This story shows us what it means to be selfless, caring and how to show kindness. It’s amazing that even amidst the disgusting show of violence that we see from police brutality, there are still those who will go out of their way to do something kind for another. We believe that these are important qualities that should be in every individual , but especially in caregivers. A-1 Home Care in Huntington Beach ensures that its 24 Hour and live in caregivers are up to date with the latest knowledge on in home health support. Trained with 2 years or more of previous caregiver experience, our caregivers are expert and professional.

Money Management Assistance for Seniors in Huntington Beach during the Holidays

A-1 Home Care - Care PlanAs grandparents get ready to go holiday shopping for their kids and especially their grandchildren, balancing checkbooks and managing bank accounts can be a struggle.  Even if you did not have Alzheimer’s and Dementia, looking at your budget can be overwhelming when you try to figure out what to buy without going bankrupt.  The elderly are known for being vulnerable when it comes to money.  You hear many stories of elder abuse involving financial exploitation from caregivers who were hired from private ads or referred by a friend who had good intentions but lack of knowledge about a caregiver’s criminal background.  That’s why it’s important to hire a caregiver from a licensed, bonded and insured home care agency like A-1 Home Care in Huntington Beach.  Such home care agencies are regulated by the insurance companies that bond them, which means they cannot recruit caregivers who have questionable backgrounds.

What it means to be licensed, bonded and insured

Any company like A-1 Home Care in Huntington Beach that boasts about being licensed, bonded and insured will guarantee that the services you receive are completely trustworthy and reliable.  For families and their elderly loved ones, this means that if a caregiver is hired to perform daily tasks like housekeeping, meal preparation, and money management, then the caregiver was “good enough” to be insured by the home care agency’s insurance company.  Before a caregiver can enter your home, A-1 Home Care must perform an extensive criminal background check, DMV check and other reference checks before the caregiver, home health aide, certified nurse aide or companion is able to enter your home.  If anything bad happens, the insurance company will compensate you for the losses.

Types of management assistance

To protect your elderly loved one from online shopping scams and other forms of financial exploitation, A-1 Home Care will assist seniors in Huntington Beach in monitoring your loved one’s online activities, balancing their checkbooks, keeping an eye out for unusual purchases, setting up a budget, and ensuring that rent and utilities get paid.  Because age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia affect seniors’ thinking skills, it is essential that caregivers be trustworthy and competent in helping seniors make wise choices when shopping for gifts.

Depression & Companionship for Elderly & Seniors

a-1 home care

It’s unfortunate when our time becomes so constrained when we spend long days at work, have to take care of our children, and deal with other matters as adults.  It’s a sure thing that our Elderly parents miss us and wish us to visit more, especially if we live far away.  When an Elderly individual is socially isolated, lives alone, or is coping with a medical illness such as chronic pain, Cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, or Diabetes, there is a high risk of depression.  Depression is oftentimes confused with the symptoms of medical conditions and thought to be normal, but if left untreated, it can increase the risk of cardiac diseases and accelerate the effects of medical conditions.  Thankfully however, treatment options are effective.

One non-medical option that could benefit your Elderly loved one would be hiring an in-home companion to provide companionship and serve as an activity partner for your loved one.  A-1 Home Care provides compassionate and qualified caregivers, nurse aides, and companions forCompanion Services on a 24 hour live-in basis orhourly part-time basis.  According to PubMed Health, surrounding yourself with caring, positive people and fun activities is one of many preliminary steps to treatment.

Cancer Care Available for Seniors in Huntington Beach

Did you know that there are many different forms of cancer, which range from Bladder Cancer to Lung Cancer to Melanoma? These diseases are all unique in their own symptoms, but what they share in common, especially for malignant cancer, is the pain that can come from living with cancer. Not only is there risk of harm from the disease itself, but also from the methods used to treat cancer. Chemotherapy is often used to combat cancer, but the radiation from chemo therapy often leaves their patients in pain and without hair. It’s a very painful procedure, both physically and emotionally.

Healthy Diets for Seniors and Elderly in Huntington Beach, CA

Oftentimes, we find ourselves munching on the same types of food in an alternating pattern.  We tend to stick to our favorites, whether it’s spaghetti, salmon, or Chinese food for dinner.  For Elderly and Senior individuals, trying to convince them to stick to a completely new diet can be difficult.  It’s important to stress the health benefits that come with paying attention to what foods your loved one eats and that eating healthy doesn’t just benefit them, but their loved ones as well who care deeply for their well-being.

One diet that not many may know about is the Mediterranean diet, which has been known for its heart-health benefits.  The diet includes the use of olive oil as the main fat and consumption of fruits, nuts, vegetables, fish, and seafood.  A study conducted by researchers from the University of Navarra in Spain tested 522 men and women between the ages of 55 and 80 who were assigned to either the Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet for 6.5 years.  The significance in the study lies in the fact that although both are heart-healthy diets, the Mediterranean diet was found to improve cognitive function and those on the diet were less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment or dementia.

At A-1 Home Care, our 24 Hour Caregivers focus on providing healthy and nutritious meals to Elderly, Senior, and Terminally Ill individuals, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  A well-balanced diet, daily exercise, and companionship are essential to a happy and healthy lifestyle at home.  No matter what your loved one’s care situation may be, we can find you an experienced and compatible caregiver for 24 Hour Live-In Care or Hourly Care.
