A study conducted by researchers from the University of Navarra in Spain tested 522 men and women between the ages of 55 and 80 who were assigned to either the Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet for 6.5 years. The significance in the study lies in the fact that although both are heart-healthy diets, the Mediterranean diet was found to improve cognitive function and those on the diet were less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment or dementia.
